Bengalcommerce Book Search/Usage Guidelines

Searching for books in bengalcommerce.com is a little different than using the standard search engines. The reason for this is because all book names and author names are Bengali words, phonetically translated to English! However, since there are no standard way in which a Bengali word is spelt in English, there may be some difference in the way the entity is spelled in our catalog, versus the way you feel the term should be written. Accordingly, here are some simple tips:

1. More is not necessarily better! Since you can rarely be completely sure of the exact spelling of a keyword, only provide the minimum search text which you're sure of. For example, a word could be pronounced as Suneel or Sunil - the safe search word here would be just "sun". This will match both case - you might see more results but at least, you've a better chance of finding what you're looking for.
2. Two whites and you're out! Bengalcommerce.com will not provide any search results until you type in at least two, non-whitespace letters, but you may sometimes want to provide only two letters for you search (for the prior reason). The two required letter should generally be alphabetic and should not include special characters like percentage, exclamation, pound, quotes etc.
3. Select the correct search option. For general browsing, the 'By Title' option implies that the search phrase you enter will be used for finding matches from all book titles only at bengalcommerce.com. Similarly, if you are looking for authors, use the pulldown menu to activate authors, and then type in part of the author name. Please note that the search engine expects either part of the first name or part of the last name - do not provide a combination of both! For example, if you are looking for Bimal Kar, you may try "kar" or "bim", but don't try "bimal ka"! - combination field searches are NOT supported.
4. Case is unimportant! Bengalcommerce.com book search is a case-insensitive operation. This means that you don't have to worry whether the search text is in uppercase, lowercase or mixed - the search is based only on actual letters, not whether they're in caps or not. For example, Sunil, sunil or SUNIL are all valid keystrings for the same search result.
5. Books may be multi-category. The same book may be listed under several categories like Prabandha, Anthology, Choto Galpa, etc. It must satisfy our editor's criteria for inclusion.
6. Front page books aren't the only ones! You will notice that each week, our editor recommends a few books on the main bookstore page. Do not think these are the only ones we carry. Because our book database is huge, we simply cannot list all our books or authors in one page. Accordingly, access to book names and details is only through the search methods. Currently, we provide 4 search paths - by title, by author, by category and by price under $10/.

Book Details and Purchase

The sequence of activities needed to buy a book are:

• Using a search technique, generate a list of books matching your preferences.
• Click on one book's link from the list. This will show the detail page, with price, description, picture etc.
• If you want to buy, click on the "Add to Shopping Cart" button. This will take you to a different page for order replay. It'll show you the total price and items ordered so far. You'll see a button for "Proceed to Checkout".
• You will also see a link for Continue Shopping, which you might click if you want to look at more books. This will take you to the main search page.
• When you're ready to buy, click on Proceed to Checkout button. This will take you to our secure server. You will see your order again and be asked to provide your shipping and payment information (credit card/check).
• After you type in the payment info, click submit. You'll see the total payment breakdown and shipping charges. Click Submit to activate your order.
• Please provide a valid email account. We will NOT BE RESPONSIBLE for order delivery errors if you fail to provide an accurate email account. A system generated confirmation will automatically be sent to the customer provided email.
• Your shopping cart information is only valid till you close your browser. After you've finished placing the bengalcommerce order, you must shut down the browser completely to ensure that the session information (including shopping cart data) is destroyed. Failure to close your browser completely after the order placement (including closing all sub-windows) will immediately invalidate our credit-card protection guarantee.
